ESPRESSO T.V. Resonance, Mali 1 x 52'
One of the poorest countries in the world, bruised by an endless drought which has spelt ruin for the whole of the Sahel region, bloodied by the violent revolt of the Touaregs, weakened by endemic African corruption and by illiteracy, Mali merits more than this pessimistic view of it that is too often shown on our television screens. Today, Timbuktu, that legendary town which the advancing desert was condemning to oblivion has been saved, the desert is receding and the people of Mali can feel proud of their success. Mali is also the will of a country and of a people to open the way in Africa to democratic reform, a difficult ambition and strewn with pitfalls. But Mali is also, and above all, the discovery of one of the most fascinating countries in the world. From the Sahara to the legendary Valley of the Dogons, from the banks of the river Niger to the limits of Bamako, this film aspires to be an ode to the beauty of Mali and a clear-sighted invocation to its future.
